Home Massage Etiquette: What to Wear, Tipping and Other Questions People Are Too Shy to Ask
Booking a massage is easy. Knowing what to do once the therapist arrives can feel less obvious, especially the first time someone comes to your home. How much should you undress? Should you offer them a drink? Is it rude to stay silent? What if you fall asleep, or your stomach rumbles, or you have not shaved your legs?
These are some of the most common questions people have before a home massage, and most are too shy to ask. This guide answers them honestly so you can relax and enjoy your session.
Before the therapist arrives
Do I need to prepare anything?
Very little. Clear a space roughly two by three metres for the bed, dim the lights, and set the air conditioning a little warmer than usual. Your therapist brings everything else, including the bed, linens, towels, oils, lighting and music. Our guide on what to do before and after a massage has a full checklist.
Should I tidy up?
Your therapist is there to treat you, not inspect your home. A clear floor space is all they need. That said, many people find they relax more in a tidy room, so a quick clear-up can help you.
Should I shower?
It is appreciated if you can, especially if you have been outside in the heat or exercising. If you cannot, that is fine too.
What about shaving?
Not necessary at all. Therapists do not notice or care. Do whatever makes you comfortable.
What about pets and children?
Pets are best kept in another room, both for your relaxation and because some therapists have allergies. If children are at home, it helps to have another adult looking after them.
Greeting your therapist
How do I let them in?
If you live in a building with security or reception, let them know a visitor is expected. For hotels, inform reception of the therapist’s name and arrival time. In gated communities, share any gate or access instructions when you book.
Should I offer them something?
A glass of water is a kind gesture, especially in summer, but it is not expected. Show them where they can set up and where the bathroom is.
Do I need to help set up?
No. Your therapist will set up the bed and linens. Feel free to finish what you are doing.
What to wear and how much to undress
This is the question we hear most. The short answer: undress to whatever level is comfortable for you.
For most oil massages, people undress to their underwear. Some prefer to remove everything, which is also completely normal. You will be covered by a sheet or towel at all times, and only the area being worked on is uncovered. This is called draping, and professional therapists follow it carefully.
Your therapist will leave the room or turn away while you undress and get under the sheet. They will knock or ask before coming back in.
Treatment-specific clothing
- Thai massage: loose, stretchy clothing. You stay dressed. See our Thai massage guide.
- Reflexology: fully clothed, with trousers you can roll up.
- Pregnancy massage: undress to your comfort level. Many women keep a comfortable bra on.
- Madero therapy: usually underwear, with the treatment areas uncovered.
Choosing your therapist
Can I request a male or female therapist?
Yes. Just say so when you book. Many clients have a preference, and it is never an issue.
Can I request the same therapist each time?
Yes, where availability allows. Continuity helps, as your therapist gets to know your body and preferences.
During the massage
Should I talk?
Whatever you prefer. Some people chat throughout. Others want complete silence. Most therapists will follow your lead, so if you would like quiet, simply close your eyes and say you are going to relax.
What if the pressure is wrong?
Say so, as early as possible. “A bit lighter, please,” “more pressure there,” or “that’s perfect” are all helpful. Therapists genuinely want this feedback. It is not rude.
What if I fall asleep?
That is a compliment. Your therapist will gently wake you when it is time to turn over.
What if my stomach rumbles?
It happens all the time. As your body relaxes, digestion becomes more active. Nobody notices or cares.
What if I feel emotional?
Some people feel tearful or emotional during a deep massage. It is a natural response to deep relaxation. Your therapist will give you space, and you can pause the session if you want.
Can I use the bathroom during the session?
Of course. Just let your therapist know.
Should I keep my phone nearby?
We recommend putting it in another room on silent. It is the single most common thing that prevents people relaxing.
Boundaries and professionalism
A professional massage is a therapeutic treatment. Your therapist should:
- Ask about your health and preferences before starting
- Leave the room or turn away while you undress
- Keep you properly draped at all times
- Never touch intimate areas
- Stop or adjust immediately if you are uncomfortable
You can stop a session at any time, for any reason. If anything ever feels inappropriate, end the session and contact the provider. Equally, clients are expected to treat therapists with respect. Professional massage providers in Dubai, including us, do not offer anything other than therapeutic treatments.
After the massage
How long will pack-down take?
Usually ten to fifteen minutes. Your therapist will give you time to get dressed first, and then pack everything away and leave your room as they found it.
Can I shower straight away?
Yes. Many people like to leave the oil on for a while. After hot stone massage, wait an hour before a hot shower.
Should I give feedback?
Yes, please. What did you love? What would you change? It helps your therapist and helps us match you well next time.
Tipping in Dubai
Tipping is not mandatory in the UAE, and it is never expected for a home massage. It is, however, appreciated if you were happy with your session. If you would like to tip, around 10 percent is common, though any amount is kind. You can hand it directly to your therapist in cash.
If you book regularly, a tip now and again is a nice way to show appreciation, but there is no obligation.
Travelling to the United States? Tipping customs there are quite different, and this US tipping calculator shows typical amounts for spas, restaurants and taxis.
Cancelling and rescheduling
Life happens. If you need to cancel or move a booking, let us know as early as possible so the therapist can adjust their day. Our terms explain the cancellation policy.
Booking at a hotel
- Check that the hotel allows visiting therapists.
- Let reception know the therapist’s name and arrival time.
- Make sure there is enough floor space in the room.
- If you are sharing a room, let your companion know.
Sharing health information
Many people feel unsure about how much health information to share with a therapist. The answer is anything that might affect your treatment. That includes pregnancy, recent surgery, injuries, high or low blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes, skin conditions, allergies and medication, particularly blood thinners. Your therapist does not need your full medical history, but these details help them choose the right techniques and pressure, and avoid anything that could be uncomfortable or unsafe.
Everything you share is kept confidential and used only to plan your treatment. If there is something you would rather not discuss in front of family members at home, mention it when you book or speak to your therapist privately before the session begins.
Cultural considerations in Dubai
Dubai is home to people from almost every country, with a wide range of customs and preferences. Professional therapists are used to this and will respect your wishes around modesty, therapist gender and the presence of family members. If you have particular cultural or religious preferences, such as keeping certain areas covered, simply let us know when you book.
Respecting your therapist’s time
Home therapists often travel between several appointments a day across Dubai, so being ready at your booked time helps them stay on schedule. If you are running late or need to change the time, a quick WhatsApp message is always appreciated.
Frequently asked questions
Is it awkward having a stranger in my home?
Most people feel a little unsure the first time, then wonder why they did not try it sooner. Professional therapists are discreet and quick to put you at ease.
What if I do not like the treatment?
Tell your therapist during the session so they can adjust, or let us know afterwards.
Can someone else be in the room?
Yes, if you are comfortable with it. For couples bookings, two therapists treat you side by side.
Do I need to pay in advance?
Payment details are confirmed when you book. Ask us on WhatsApp if you have questions.
