Choosing between deep tissue and sports massage

Deep Tissue Massage

Both treatments are firm, both use the forearm and elbow as much as the hands, and both leave you looser than you arrived. The difference is not intensity — it is intention.

Deep tissue

Deep tissue works slowly through the deeper muscle layers to release tension that has settled in over months: desk shoulders, a stiff lower back, hips that no longer rotate freely. The therapist stays with one area until it yields, which is why a sixty-minute deep tissue session often covers only the back and neck.

It can be uncomfortable in the moment and is usually followed by a day of mild soreness, in the way a heavy training session is. That fades into noticeably more range of movement by the second day.

Sports massage

Sports massage is faster and more specific. It prepares a muscle group for load or clears it afterwards, and combines compression, stripping strokes and assisted stretching. Sessions are often shorter and targeted at whatever you train: calves and hamstrings for runners, shoulders and lats for swimmers, quads and glutes for cyclists.

Active and relocating? These guides to moving to Austin and moving to New York City cover two of the most active US cities.

Which to book

If you are training and want to recover faster or move better, book sports massage, ideally within a day either side of a hard session. If you are carrying stress in your body and want it worked out properly, book deep tissue. If you want neither discomfort nor soreness, book Balinese or aromatherapy instead — firmness is not the same as benefit.
