Building a spa room in a Dubai apartment

Building a spa room in a Dubai apartment

A treatment room is mostly subtraction. Clear a two-metre square of floor, close the blinds, move the coffee table against the wall, and the space is already most of the way there. Everything else your therapist carries in.

Light first

Overhead lighting is the single thing that keeps people from settling. One warm lamp at floor or table level, angled away from the bed, does more for the room than any candle. If the apartment has dimmers, take them to roughly a quarter.

Then temperature

Set the air a degree or two warmer than you would normally sit in. The body cools quickly when it is still and mostly uncovered, and a cold room keeps the shoulders up around the ears no matter how good the work is. Point the air conditioning away from the bed rather than switching it off entirely.

Working with a small space somewhere else? This guide to moving to New York City covers apartment life there, and the rent vs. salary calculator helps you plan.

Sound and scent last

Both should be quieter than you expect. Music sits underneath the room, not in it — low enough that you stop noticing it within a minute. Scent should be a single note rather than a blend, and it belongs at the edge of the room, never beside your head.

None of this needs buying. Your therapist arrives with the bed, linens, oils, lighting and sound, and the room goes back exactly as it was when they leave.
